How should a professional website be built?

NS Studio 4 min read

Today we are trying to find an answer to the question “How should a professional website be built?”, which is of interest to most people.

  • First of all, let me note that anyone who wants to build a website must find answers to the questions “Why do I need a website?” and “What will I use this website for?”. If goals such as increasing sales through the website or serving existing customers better are reviewed, it becomes much clearer what level the design and functionality should be at.
  • Even if the person with the idea is not a programmer themselves, they should research this field and gain at least some knowledge. The reason is that this person must convey information about their project to a programmer completely and clearly, and must grasp what is possible during development. They should also research competitor websites in advance and consider whether the technologies to be used in building the site are better than, or at least equal to, theirs.
  • At the next stage, an appealing name that explains the purpose and is not too long must be chosen for the website, along with the hosting company where it will be placed. The name matters for staying in customers' minds, and the hosting matters for the site's loading speed. At the same time, both of these affect the site's ranking in search engines (Google, Yandex, Bing, etc.).
  • The website's design is an even more influential factor than the points mentioned above. The design must be such that it does not tire new users who are unfamiliar with the system. In parallel with this, the design must display correctly in all browsers and at all screen sizes, and a mobile version must be prepared. Websites without a mobile design are pushed down in the rankings, because large search engines such as Google consider them unusable for the user.
  • SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) – This is perhaps an unfamiliar concept for many people reading this article. This process, which stands for “Search Engine Optimisation”, is necessary — indeed obligatory — for a website to become known. During SEO, the website must be presented correctly to the search engines we mentioned earlier. Thanks to SEO, the bots sent to a website by search engines can check which search terms this site will be shown for, and whether it holds comprehensive information for users. I would like to continue with something my mentor once said: “The second page of Google is a graveyard, and only those interested in the dead go there”. Funny as it sounds, that is how it is. 90% of users only open the websites that appear on the first page of Google; almost nobody looks at the second and later pages. That is why SEO must be carried out so that the website appears on the first page for the search terms that matter.
  • Once each of the points above has been addressed, does the website become professional? NO. Building the website and carrying out SEO correctly is only the beginning of the work. In the stage that follows, the site's content must be updated constantly. “We bring to the fore the sites that deliver the most up-to-date information to our users” – says Google.
  • The internet is a hugely competitive space; to stay standing here, you must work harder than your competitors and not lose heart. Because in search engines it is not people but bots that rank the sites. Even if you have to put in some effort, in the end you will get the result!
